$uperBorder$ is the brand name for Border Leicester rams that are of high genetic merit in maternal traits, such as growth rate, milk yield and fertility. The name $uperBorder$ is trademarked and is only available to members and their clients. Rams must also be structurally sound and bred in registered Border Leicester studs that are disease free. |
| A better way to go |
| Border Leicester rams have been traditionally sold on the basis of their visual appearance alone. In the absence of other information, rams have been selected on size and wool style. Good feed, early drop or being reared as a single, all help to make a ram look good. However, a ram with good genetics, particularly for fertility, a trait that cannot be assessed visually, will be more commercially valuable to both the First and Second-cross breeder. |
Fully Recorded Studs |
Studs that breed $uperBorder$ rams are required to record all rams and most ewes in their flocks. All lambs are weighed at weaning and again at 9 months of age. They are also scanned for fat and muscle depth at that age and rams are measured for scrotal circumference. Wool weights are recorded at one common shearing. Birth, rearing and pedigree records identify the more fertile and better milking bloodlines. Many studs also record birth weights and weight at 6 months and 12 months of age. Some studs record worm resistance and temperament. These comprehensive records ensure that the quoted breeding values are as accurate as they can be made at the time of sale. |
LAMBPLAN provides genetic values |
All pedigree and performance records are submitted to LAMBPLAN, who undertake corrections for sex, age, twinning and feeding regimes. Comparisons are made across all flocks using link sires and all additional data from a lamb’s relatives are added into the equation. LAMBPLAN then calculate the likely difference in genetic potential of each lamb and express it as a deviation from the average. These are Estimated Breeding Values, or EBVs. They are comparable across all flocks. |
Rams tagged as $uperBorder$ |
| These rams may be identified at a glance by their official $uperBorder$ yellow ear-tags. This tag is a sign of a quality ram that will breed above average lambs and produce higher returns for a prime lamb enterprise. |
Faster genetic gain |
| $uperBorder$ breeders are all linked together by common sires. They also source and share the best rams from across their flocks and match them to more than 6000 ewes. They receive new information on advances in genetic analysis on a regular basis and adopt this sooner than other breeders. The result is that $uperBorder$ flocks are making faster genetic gain than other breeders. |
